Online Lessons FAQ

Q- Do I need broadband Internet service to take lessons?

A-No, however broadband internet users (specifically cable) can take advantage of both video and audio. Other users can take advantage of these lessons by signing up for audio-only lessons. Some DSL and wireless high-speed may work, but not all.

Q- Will I need new software or hardware?

A-There are several options for online students, and it is likely that no additional software is necessary to purchase. A webcam (most include a microphone) is recommended for broadband users to take advantage of video capabilities. A microphone and speakers/headphones are needed for audio lessons, and of course, you'll need the ability to hear music through your computer.

Q- I've heard Dennis is a great player, but how much teaching experience does he have?

A-Dennis has not only been teaching private students for over 15 years, but has also taught across the country as part of Turtle Bay Music School (NYC), Joe Filisko's Harmonica Class at Old Towne School of Folk Music (Chicago), Jon Gindick Harmonica Jam Camps (NJ, MO, GA, CA, FL, NC, TX), Dave Barrett Harmonica Masterclass (NY, NJ, CA), Augusta Blues Week (WV), numerous SPAH Harmonica Conventions, Buckeye Harmonica Festivals in addition to his own Jam Classes & Workshops (NJ, PA, FL, GA, VA, MD, DC, IL).

Q- I'm not sure this will work. Can I take a trial lesson?

A-Yes, half-hour first lessons/evaluations are available for new students.

Q- I'd like a full-length lesson, but I'm not sure when I can take another.

A-There are two options to sign up for lessons with Dennis Gruenling. You can sign up for a full "semester" of lessons (6 sessions), or sign up for a half-semester (3 sessions). Due to his busy schedule, Dennis is only accepting new students committing to more than one lesson. There are more study options available for the full semester students (Artist Study and Transcriptions for example), but any techniques can be covered with any student.

Q- I'm committed to improving my playing and want to sign up for regular lessons. How does that work?

A-If you're a full-time student, lessons are taught in semester blocks. A semester lasts for 6 sessions, usually once every week, or every other week. The semester can begin whenever you are ready. Dennis gives you a lesson plan for the semester, which you will help decide on, so you know where you'll be going and can chart your progress. Lesson plans will depend on how often you schedule the sessions, how much you practice, and if you are a half-semester or semester student.

Q- What if I need to miss a lesson?

A-There are some allowed re-schedulings during any given semester. These lessons must be made up according to schedule availability. If the student needs to re-schedule the whole group of lessons, the semester can be moved to start at a later date.

Q- Can I record the live lesson?

A-Students will receive audio clips of lesson exercises, via email and on CD upon semester completion. Lessons may not be recorded for any reason without written permission by Dennis Gruenling.

Q- The special online extras for students are great; I'd like to share them with a friend.

A-Online extras (discounts, access to special clips, jam tracks, transcriptions, etc...) are a premium offered to full-time students. You are paying for these and they are not to be shared with others.
